My name is Stefan Bogaerts and I am trained as a psychologist, criminologist, and psychotherapist in Belgium and in England. In 2001, I obtained my PhD and, after a brief stay at the University of Ghent, I started working in the Netherlands. In 2005, I was appointed as a professor of victimology and forensic psychology, and until 2014, I was also part-time affiliated in that position with Tilburg Law School and the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Until 2014, I was a professor one day a week at KU Leuven. From 2015, I have been working full-time as a professor of developmental psychopathology and forensic psychology at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Department of Developmental Psychology, where I have been the chair of the department since 2020.

My research focuses on developmental psychopathology in relation to internalizing and externalizing behavior. In my research, behavioral change, life span perspective, and transitions are central, and I try to connect individual, interpersonal, and broader societal processes. Over the last 10 years, I have become very interested in innovative technologies, such as virtual reality, and especially the use of technology in the treatment of vulnerable groups. Additionally, I attempt to apply multimethod research by using self-report, qualitative methods, and physiological markers in my research. Over the past 20 years, I have secured various national and international grants. Furthermore, I am the chair of the recognition committee for judicial behavioral interventions in the Netherlands and a member of the advisory board for conditional release.
