I am Wike Been, an Assistant Professor in the Sociology of Work at the University of Groningen. I hold a PhD in Sociology from Utrecht University (2015) and a Research Master’s degree in Population Studies from the University of Groningen (2009). Before returning to Groningen, I worked as a researcher at the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment and at the University of Amsterdam’s Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS).
My research focuses on labour market transitions and the behavioural dynamics that shape the future of work. I am particularly interested in how the changing behaviours, considerations, and preferences of both workers and employers develop in response to shifts in the wider societal and economic context—such as the rise of self-employment in the creative sector, the increasing use of generative AI, and the erosion of traditional systems of industrial relations, but also how these developments themselves result from changes in individual’s behavior.
