Hi, I’m dr. Roel Lutkenhaus, assistant professor in media and communication at the department of communication science at the University of Twente. I study the role of digital platforms, popular culture, and public debate in societal transitions. My focus is on how platforms influence people’s behavior and engagement with societal issues. I use digital research methods, combining data analysis with participatory approaches. I work across disciplines to apply research insights in public health, media literacy, and civic engagement.

Social transition(s) addressed

Young people’s online and offline lives are increasingly connected. This project explores how digital platforms affect their health, safety, and opportunities, and how we can build digital resilience.

Behavioral change(s) addressed

We examine how social media influences young people’s views and behaviors. Through workshops and peer-led interventions, we help them navigate risks and use digital platforms in positive ways.

Theoretical approach

The project combines insights from media studies, public health, and behavioral science to understand digital inequalities and the impact of social media.

Empirical research strategies

As co-initiator and co-lead, I focus on connecting quantitative and qualitative research with participatory methods. We use:

  • Survey data from the Rotterdam Youth Health Monitor to map health and digital exposure.
  • Social media analysis to study what young people see and engage with online.
  • Workshops with youth to co-create solutions and policy recommendations.

Possibilities for inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration

The project brings together researchers, policymakers, educators, and youth organizations. By linking digital research with real-world action, we create practical tools for education, public health, and policy.
